Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a biological condition of not being able to focus, being overactive, not being able to manage behavior, or a combination of these conditions.
Symptoms
Symptoms of ADHD fall into three groups:
- Inattentiveness
- Hyperactivity
- Impulsivity
- Combination of these
Inattentive Symptoms
- Failure to provide close attention to details
- Makes careless mistakes in schoolwork
- Is easily distracted
- Is often forgetful in daily activities
- Has a problem keeping attention during tasks
- Has problems organizing tasks and activities
- Does not follow through on instructions
- Often misplaces toys, assignments, pencils, books, or tools for tasks or activities
Hyperactivity Symptoms
- Squirms in seat or fidgets with hands or feet or
- Runs about or climbs in inappropriate situations
- Has problems playing or working quietly
- Is often “on the go”
- Talks excessively
Impulsivity Symptoms
- Has difficulty awaiting turn
- Shouts out answers immediately before questions have been completed
- Interrupts or intrudes on others
ADHD causes
The precise cause of ADHD is not known. But these factors may play a role:
- Heredity
- Influences during pregnancy
- Brain injury
